Meta tags are the tags which contain information about the data.
They are used in INPAGE-SEO technique . These tags are not shown in the web page, but they can be seen on the HTML code of that page.
As we all know webpage is made of the HTML codes.
Meta tags tells the search engine about the content of the page that’s why we says that it contain data of the data.
You can say that they act like content describer for the search engine.
Google supports both page-level meta-tags as well as inline directives to help control how your site’s pages will appear in Search.
The google algorithm understand only the meta tags and not the whole content of the web page.
Bascially these tags are put on the top of the web page that is in the head section.These tags also helps in your web page ranking.

Meta tags Attributes
This attribute will specify the character encoding for the HTML documents. Common values:
- UTF-8 – Character encoding for Unicode
- ISO-8859-1 – Character encoding for the Latin alphabet
Content attribute gives the value associated with the http-equiv or name attribute. This is the second attribute of this tag.

As from the tag name we can understand that this attribute will tell the description of the web page. This tag is important as it can catch the user attention .This is the block which is shown when user search for the keyword .
Viewport attribute is important for the mobile world. If you will not specify view port then you may have risk of poor mobile experience .
Now a days mobile experience is very important factor for ranking .

This attribute tell the search engine whether to index or follow the webpage or not.
- Index/noindex : It will tell the engine to show the webpage in searvh result or not.
